Polar icebreaker, nuclear turbo electric

  • Delivery : 1988 & 1989
  • Length : 150m
  • Breadth : 28m
  • Propulsion : 32MW

Taimyr and Vaygach, delivered in 1988 and 1989, are the first nuclear powered icebreakers built outside Russia. Vessels were build ready in Finland excluding the reactor power plant that was assembled in Russia after the delivery. Icebreaking capability of the vessels in levelled ice is 2.85 m.

The vessels can accommodate 138 persons. All the accommodation is in the deckhouse, above the main deck, to minimise the noise from the icebreaking. When off duty, the crew has a wide choice of leisure facilities: library, cinema, gymnasium, fitness centre, swimming pool with sauna, photo laboratory and hobby room. A special feature is the greenhouse, where fresh vegetables are grown.
